IRS Enrolled Agent
Enrolled Agents are tax professionals licensed or enrolled to practice before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Only Enrolled Agents, attorneys, and CPAs may represent taxpayers before the IRS. The Enrolled Agent profession dates back to 1884, when Congress acted to regulate persons who represented citizens in their dealings with the U.S. Treasury Department. As an Enrolled Agent you may practice independently, be employed by the IRS or as an in-house tax accountant.
The IRS Enrolled Agent graduate is expected to pass the Special Enrollment Examination. This test is a comprehensive examination which covers all aspects of the Internal Revenue Code ("IRC"). Any student passing this examination as well as a background check is permitted to become an Enrolled Agent.
